Branford Marsalis Portland Concert reviews
Pearl Jam MSG 5/2/16
Branford Marsalis was outstanding as usual. A few snoozers mixed in amongst a very good selection though, the band sounded great. The guy never fails to remind me what an underrated guitar player he really is. Cheap Trick and Sting showing up were pleasant surprises. Splitting hairs here really. No opener, which I prefer for a band with an extensive catalog such as these guys. I could go for a tad earlier, but mostly because it was a work night and I'm getting long in the tooth. Hit the stage around 8:30. They mixed the mood, tempo and energy up pretty damned well. Eddie sounded great, as always Mike McCready was quite impressive. Setlist was very good.
The crowd was jubilant, engaged, upbeat and happier than any group of humans has any right to be. Despite this appearance, they were the friendliest, most accepting, and truly ecstatic crowd I've seen in a long time. Giddy really. So many 30+ year old frat boy types. Giddy really. To look at the sold out crowd, and I mean backstage, everywhere, literally packed to the rafters, you would think you walked into an Alpha Kappa Douchebag homecoming. I'm talking ridiculously over the top happy. The crowd was lit. This group was louder than the band most of the night, and sang along raucously throughout the night, right down to house lights and Yellow Ledbetter. I swear O think half of them were on MDMA. I've never seen so much bro-hugging in my life.
In terms of the venue, what can I say? Prices were typical and not at all unrealistic. The place looks fantastic since the remodel, concessions are incredibly diverse, including extensive beer and mixed drink selections. I was in a party of 3 and I think all of our drinks cost around a c-note for the night. Sound was very good, not great, but real nice. I still can't wrap my head around the bridge yet. The staff at The Garden are top notch. Courteous, unbelievably patient and nice. Real pros. I think I dig it, but it definitely changes the dynamic and flow of the place. And they don't hassle people about the small stuff like dancing or smoking, moving around the place, etc. you be chill with them and they're chill right back. My seats were ok, not too high up or far back, could see everything great. I wasn't in the sweet spot either. I am of the opinion that MSG sound much better than most sports arenas acoustically.
My only complaints were that it was way too hot inside the arena and they ran out of event merch way too fast. We were there an hour prior to showtime and there were no MSG event specific t-shirts(NONE regardless of size), stickers, posters, nothing at all left. The heat sucks the energy out of the crowd after a while. If it were 15 degrees cooler in there I couldda stayed and listened to PJ until the sun came up. Truly nitpicking here. This was a great night overall!
